A
support association in Switzerland is founded and the home named La Luz del
Mundo opened in San Pedro Sula with 18 children, 10 of them in elementary school.
Later that year, the name is changed to El Refugio. |
| 1995 |
EL
REFUGIO is officially recognized by the Honduran authorities who start referring children
to EL REFUGIO. First plans for a new home are developed. |
| 1997 |
The new
home is inaugurated with a capacity of 40 boys and girls. |
| 1998 |
The
home reaches full capacity with 40 children. Hurricane Mitch destroys large parts of
Honduras. However, EL REFUGIO is not directly affected. |
| 1999 |
An
expansion of the home is constructed with two new childrens dormitories, a sports
court and a welding workshop. There are now 75 children at EL REFUGIO. |
| 2000 |
A group
of volunteers from the U.S. builds our three room elementary school. |
| 2001 |
The
welding workshop begins operating with 12 external trainees |
| 2002 |
The
library building and volunteer apartment are finished. |
| 2003 |
The
building for the bakery and sewing workshop is finished. |
| 2004 |
EL
REFUGIO executes a project for the World Bank a 10 month training program for 50
internal and external teenagers in the areas of welding, bakery and sewing. |
| 2005 |
A new
well outside the home provides 100 gallons of water per minute and ends our year-old water
shortage. |
| 2006 |
The
first EL REFUGIO students go to college in San Pedro Sula and EL REFUGIO is connected to
the Internet for the first time. |
| 2006 |
The new
recreation center is inaugurated. |
| 2007 |
A 10
foot wall is built around the entire compound for the safety of the children. EL REFUGIO
starts an educational program consisting of computer classes, library time and activities
in the recreational center for EL REFUGIO and neighborhood children. |
